How It Works

Solar and storage, in plain English.

A simple overview of how compact solar and batteries work — and why the right fit depends on your home.

The big picture

From sunlight to your home.

  1. Sunlight
  2. Solar panels
  3. Compatible equipment
  4. Home energy use / battery storage

How solar generation works

Solar panels contain cells that convert sunlight into electricity. The more direct sunlight a panel receives, the more it can generate.

Orientation, shading, the season and the time of day all affect how much electricity a panel produces.

How battery storage works

Solar panels generate most during the middle of the day, which isn’t always when a household uses the most energy.

A battery can store some of that energy so it can be used later — for example in the evening.

Why suitability matters

Every property is different. Sunlight, available space, safe mounting, electrical requirements and any landlord or strata permissions all play a part.
